Are melting moments and yo-yos the same thing?

Close, but not quite! Melting moments are made with cornflour, whereas yo-yos are made with custard powder which gives them a yellow tint and vanilla-custard flavour.

Why are my melting moments flat?

Melting moments should spread a little bit in the oven, but they shouldn't be completely flat. The most likely culprit is that the butter was too soft. To help them hold their shape, make sure you chill the shaped biscuits for 30 minutes before baking. It's also possible (though less likely) that you under-measured the dry ingredients. Where possible, use a scale, otherwise measure your flour with the spoon-and-level method.

Can I make these without a piping bag?

Of course! I like to use a piping bag fitted with a large round tip to make them look neat and uniform, but you can absolutely use a knife or offset spatula to slather on the buttercream instead. If you like the look of piped filling but don't have a piping bag handy, simply transfer the buttercream to a sandwich bag and snip off the corner.

How long do melting moments last?

These will keep for about 4 days in an airtight container at room temperature or up to 1 week in the fridge. I think they're even better the second day because the biscuits soften slightly (in a good way). Unfilled biscuits will last up to 2 weeks.
